Every week, my cousin Arne visits Nina, a woman who once helped raise his younger brother and sister. When she was younger, Nina moved to Canada from the Philippines and worked as a nanny for Arne’s family. A few years ago, she was diagnosed with a rare and debilitating form of Multiple Sclerosis that leaves her body shaking most of the time. She now lives in a palliative care unit in Vancouver and her most frequent visitor is Arne.
The story aired on CBC Radio, Outfront in 2004 and and 2008. When Outfront recently went off the air, it broadcast 50 of its favourite stories’, and Nina and Arne was among them. In 2004, the story won a Gabriel Award and a RTNDA Award for Best Short Feature, National Broadcast.
